Hof Farendijs
For centuries
The name Farendys has existed in this region for centuries and was likely one of the farms from which Hoeilaart originated. The oldest documents date back to 1365, but its history may go as far back as the time of the Gauls.
According to Isca, een dorp uit de Ijzertijd (Djamila Timmermans), the name refers to ironworking: a place where iron-rich stones were processed using hammers and furnaces (fara). The word “dys” emphasizes the repetitive nature of this activity.
Farendys was therefore, from early on, a place where people came together to create.
Generations on the farm
Since the late 19th century, our ancestors settled at Hof Farendys, which they leased together with Ten Trappen farm and the surrounding fields. This is where our connection to the farm began.
In 1940, great-great-grandfather Eugeen made it his permanent home by purchasing the farm. This is also where grandmother Maria was born, and where the story continued to take shape, generation after generation.
Since 2007, our family has been living here, and the farm has been fully renovated. With great respect for its original elements, it now serves as a winery and wine estate.
From greenhouses to vineyard
In the years that followed, grape greenhouses appeared on the estate. At one point, there were more than twelve greenhouses dedicated to growing table grapes. This craft was passed down from generation to generation and still lives on today, to a limited extent.
Today, vines once again grow on the very spot where these greenhouses once stood. No longer table grapes, but wine grapes.
